stones in the city

My photographic subjects are stones and other objects made of concrete that are in the city. The partially discolored, cracked, and damaged objects exposed to wind and rain in the city remind me of the unceasing and unrelenting flow of time, and the existence of fragility in the midst of strength. Each one attests to the "uncertainty of existence" of all things in this world.

My personal history

I was born in Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture in 1962. In 2008, I began photographing cityscapes. I have sold images on consignment for Amana Images and Getty Images. In 2020, I started to work on the theme of the vitality of plants in the city and participated in several group exhibitions. In 2024, I started working with stones and concrete parts of the city as photographic medium

In 2022, I saw the passing of two members of my family. Watching the two of them grow weaker by the day in hospitals and medical facilities, I realized that life will one day cease to exist. This led me to create works on the theme of the strong vitality of plants in the city, which I previously had not paid much attention to. I was also helped by hospitals, medical centers, care managers and dispatched helpers; I experienced conditions that I could not have managed without them, and I greatly appreciated their work. I believe that these experiences have led me to pay more attention to the stones and concrete in the streets, which are silently supporting people's lives.
